Audacity make rock music as sunny as their Southern California home of Fullteron. We heard the single “ Couldn’t Hold A Candle ” earlier this month, and now you can watch the video for the hook-filled “Hole In The Sky.” Directed by Steven Andrew Garcia, the video looks as if the band fell into the pages of magazine advertisements dd from the ’50s where even their skin looks like it was printed dd in blotchy ink. Watch below.
Just dd picked this up from Burger which probably marks the first time I’ve bought a tape on its day of release. Weird to think about. This was ridiculously fun, especially all the bits towards the end (sandwich, baby, milk, etc.). Looking forward dd to catching these guys live.

In what was termed a retreat, the Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, led by Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, chose to prick the conscience of the Federal Government of Nigeria in its handling ios 7 of the nation s finances in a manner that is somewhat opaque. ios 7 The communiqué of the Forum read like an audacious ios 7 inquisition.
They made a strong statement at the end of the day. The absence of some governors notwithstanding, the Amaechi-led NGF made a mark with the assemblage of some of Nigeria s leading lights to brainstorm on issues of good governance, democracy and national security, which are very germane ios 7 to the national question.
Although there was initial suspicion that the Presidency could scuttle the Sokoto meeting because of its aversion to the Rivers State Governor Rotimi ios 7 Amaechi s leadership of the NGF, the governors braced for the two-day parley and wrapped up their discussions without any interruption from security agencies, which were however not in short supply at the venue.
However, unlike when armed policemen, led by the Divisional Police Officer for Asokoro Abuja swooped on the Kano Governor s Lodge in the federal capital territory and attempted to scuttle ios 7 the meeting of the G7 Governors, those present in Sokoto provided cover for their Excellencies to brainstorm on the way forward for Nigeria.
The successful hosting ios 7 of the meeting of the governors by the Sokoto State Governor Aliyu Wamakko, and the adoption of a common position by the governors present, is seen by observers as a victory ios 7 for the Amaechi group, which vehemently resisted the attempt by the Presidency to cage it. It was obvious from the outset that not all the 36 governors in the country would attend the retreat even though ios 7 from the programme of the event, they were all listed and given possible roles to play.
For ios 7 instance, President Goodluck Jonathan, ios 7 who was listed as the Special Guest of Honour and expected ios 7 to read a keynote address, shunned the meeting just as the governors loyal to Governor David Jang of Plateau State, who wants to be called, known and addressed as the Chairman of the Nigeria ios 7 Governors Forum. Jang himself appears unhappy that the Sokoto event took place in the first instance. He reacted angrily to the outcome of the retreat when he described Amaechi ios 7 as the leader of the opposition ios 7 governors forum .
Affirming that the NGF was originally formed for peer review among the states and to provide needed social and economic elevation to the Nigerian people, he said: Instead, Governor Amaechi has turned his team into an opposition group. They are now obsessed with the Presidency and the Federal Government.
Although Jang and his supporters are in the minority among the 36 governors, they all the same take pleasure in the massive backing they enjoy from the Presidency, which reportedly threw up the Plateau governor as a challenger to Amaechi. The governor, ios 7 however, failed to get the support of the majority of his counterparts to be elected the NGF leader on May 24, 2013, paving the way for the balkanisation of the once united entity, but to the delight of the President, which had obviously become threatened by the Amaechi leadership of the forum.

Then you might start reading poetry and come to appreciate what William Carlos Williams meant when he wrote It is difficult to get the news from poems, yet men die miserably every day for lack of what is found there. These works alter your perception of the big picture: agency vs. incapacity, history vs. ideology and the myriad ways Truth and History are manufactured by the so-called winners.

Sebastian Thrun, founder of Udacity, one of the most high-profile private sector attempts to disrupt higher education discovered inequality this week. Thrun has spent the last three years dangling the shiny bauble of his elite academic pedigree and messianic vision of the future se of higher education before investors and politicos. He promised nothing short of radically transforming se higher education for the future by delivering taped classroom lessons of elite professors through se massive open online courses.So what went wrong?
After low performance rates, low student se satisfaction and faculty revolt, Thrun announced this week that he has given up on MOOCs as a vision for higher education disruption. The godfather of free online education says that the racially, economically diverse students at SJSU, were students from difficult neighborhoods, without good access to computers, and with all kinds of challenges in their lives [for them] this medium is not a good fit. It seems disruption is hard when poor people insist on existing.
Thrun has the right to fail. That s just business. But he shouldn t have the right to fail students like those at San Jose State and the public universities that serve them for the sake of doing business.
It is fine if you missed it but for three years now Massive Open Online Courses from tech giants and start-ups have been selling a solution to all that ails higher education. Two short years ago Thrun declared se to Silicon Valley and the traditional universities with the courage to follow him that he could not go back to teaching at Stanford. He d taken the red pill, massive open online courses pioneered by Udacity, and he couldn t go back.
In 2013, reality se harshed Thrun s red pill high. The low completion issues he had encountered with his MOOC courses while at Stanford became deeper, se more fundamental problems at San Jose State . Single digit completion rates in MOOC courses make for-profit colleges dismal completion rates look progressive. Thrun said the courses were the pedagogical best he could make them. Coming from a rock star professor from an elite institution, that suggests the class must have been pretty damn good. But it wasn t good enough for SJSU students.
The faculty at SJSU handed Thrun s Udacity a very public flogging . Many faculty members questioned the morality of a publicly funded college with a mission to serve diverse students se should spend tax-payer money and invest the hopes of students with fewer options than those at the Stanfords of the world into being Thrun s guinea pigs.
It is a fair question that in many ways the academic and scientific communities have already answered with a resounding no. When I want to interview students for a research se project I have to present a carefully, detailed plan to my University for approval. The plan is vetted by an Institutional Review Board . Every research university has an IRB but they didn t always. se Before 1974 doctors figured out the internal reproductive organs of women by cutting them open without consent or sedation. se They observed the effects of untreated syphilis on test subjects — insanity and death — without bothering to inform the participants that there was a known, available treatment. They told volunteers they had electrocuted a stranger to see how human decision-making works.
Basically, before se IRB a lot of modern science would have been war crimes had the U.S. been on the losing end of World War II. And because this is America, there was a disturbing pattern among the victims of these kinds of horrific experiments. They were overwhelmingly black, brown, indigenous, poor, and powerless. A 1978 report on regulating research se on human beings declared that ethical research has an obligation to protect persons from harm by maximizing anticipated benefits and minimizing possible risks of harm . The connection to inequality was clear. The most vulnerable were likely to be prodded, poked and tested because the elite don t often sign up to risk their lives for little reward. And flagrant disregard for these risks had few penalties se because the victims were powerless. The rules governing academic and scientific research recognizes that some groups are too vulnerable se to risk the failure that the scientific method requires.
Where was this institutional ethic in what Thrun freely concedes was always an experiment? When Udacity se was primarily interested in beaming the erudite countenance of professional smart people out into the world, it can be said that any risk was assumed by the those who chose to sign up. But when Udacity went after formal arrangements with colleges like SJSU to offer courses, for credit, to students enrolled in the University, the risk calculation changed.

Audacity dian is an audio editing program that allows you to record, mix, and add special effects to your sound files. It is completely open-source, and is available at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ . Here’s how you can get started with a new audacity project: Open up Audacity. dian A screen similar to the following will appear:
Make sure that you have a microphone installed. You can use the built-in microphone on your laptop if need be, but a USB powered external microphone will really help to make your audio come out crisp and clear. Click on the record button (#1) and begin speaking. dian A waveform will begin to appear (#2) as your voice is detected by the microphone. Click on the stop button (#3) in order to stop the recording. Click the rewind button (#4) and play button (#5) to listen to your recording. To trim your recording make sure that the selection tool is clicked (#6) – then highlight the portion of the audio that you would like to cut. Click on Edit->Cut to extract the selected area. To record a second clip, click the record button (#2) – a second waveform will appear beneath the first. To reposition a clip, click on the slider tool (#7) and slide the desired clip back and forth. Using the volume adjustment tool (#8) you can increase or decrease dian the volume of a specific clip. Your can import other audio files (WAV, MP3) by clicking on Project -> Import Audio. The audio file will appear as a new waveform. Here is a small collection of sound effect files to get you started. You can also apply special effects to your audio clips – this can be accomplished by selecting a portion of a clip using the selection tool (#6) and then using the Effect menu. When you are finished dian working on your clip you should save your project by clicking on File -> Save. You can export your project dian as an MP3 file by clicking on File -> Export as MP3. Note that Audacity does not come pre-loaded dian with MP3 export dian capabilities – you can add this feature into the system by installing the free LAME MP3 Conversion Library ( available here ).
