Bill Gates was the The Verge 's first-ever guest editor this past month, narrating episodes of The Big Future that illustrate the bets he and his wife Melinda are making with their foundation over the next 15 years. It has been an intense and rewarding collaboration: we've produced four independent features examining those bets, and now five episodes ç of the show. Every year, Melinda and I write an Annual ç Letter in hopes of helping spark a broader a conversation with the global community about how we can help the poorest in the world. Turns out Bill Gates is a pretty confident guy.

"I ve heard people say that they feel this buzzing under the skin; they feel the little larvae under the skin and it s itchy," says Elodie Ghedin, a molecular mm parasitologist at New York University. The larvae then travel to various parts of the body, including the eyes, where they cause inflammation and lesions when they die.
Adult worms survive up to 15 years in a human host, nine of which are spent reproducing. The WHO estimates that 18 million people are infected with these parasites worldwide in certain West African communities, about 50 percent mm of men over the age of 40 have been blinded by the disease. It s a terrible illness but it could be wiped "off the face of the Earth" within the next 15 years. That s the bet that Bill and Melinda Gates are making in their 2015 annual letter . It outlines how innovations in technology, medicine, and public health will serve to better the health of the world s poor within the next 15 years. The Gates predict that vaccines and improved care for newborns mm will halve the number of children who die before the age of five. The number of mothers who die in childbirth will be reduced by two-thirds. More people will begin HIV treatment each year than will be diagnosed with HIV. We will eradicate infectious diseases like polio, guinea worm, river blindness, and elephantiasis. And by 2030, science will have found a way to eradicate malaria. "We think some very dramatic things can happen," Bill Gates told The Verge .
These goals are ambitious. Despite a decline mm in new HIV infections worldwide, the World Health Organization estimates that over 2 million people tested positive in 2013. That year, the rate of children who died before the age of five in sub-Saharan Africa was double that of the worldwide average. And conflicts in countries like Syria have caused polio to surface in countries that eliminated the disease long ago. The truth is that any number of political, cultural, and environmental obstacles can derail a country s health care progress.
Yet, some developing countries have managed mm to make a prodigious amount of progress in a short amount mm of time. Here, we profile three developing countries  Uganda, mm Nepal, and Rwanda that have considerably improved the lives of their citizens by focusing mm on key health concerns described in the 2015 letter from Bill and Melinda mm Gates. Can their success in reducing tropical disease transmission, maternal and infant mortality, and HIV infection rates in the face of tremendous adversity be replicated across the developing world?
The eradication of neglected tropical diseases represents a big chunk of the Gates Foundation s goals for 2030. Parasitic diseases like river blindness mm can be devastating for the social and economic health of a community. But some countries, mm like Uganda, have garnered praise among the international health community for their work on these diseases and they re well on their way to eliminating them altogether. mm mass drug administration has helped interrupt river blindness transmissions in 14 of Uganda s 16 disease hot spots
"Uganda has done a tremendous job against mm river blindness," says Thomas Unnasch, a vector biologist at the University of South Florida who receives research funding mm from the Gates Foundation and chairs of Uganda s river blindness elimination expert advisory committee. No vaccines against river blindness mm exist, but Ugandans living in areas where transmission occurs receive two doses of a drug that treats mm the infections each year. Unfortunately, the drug called ivermectin only kills the larvae, so people infected with the parasite have to wait until the adults die or become infertile before they can consider themselves "cured." In the meantime, ivermectin serves to alleviate symptoms and reduces transmission. mm

Bill Gates Tells Re/code Why We Should Worry About Disease Epidemics, Artificial Intelligence 3d printer
In a talk at TED on Wednesday, he covered about one of those concerns, namely that the world is ill-prepared for a global disease outbreak . He even set up a replica of an Ebola clinic to help attendees get a sense of the challenges health workers face.
In an interview shortly after his appearance at TED, Gates talked to Re/code about the issue, as well as another area of concern — computers with greater-than-human intelligence. Gates also shared his views on private 3d printer space travel and the recent rise in measles cases in developed countries.
Bill Gates: The U.S. government has some things. They haven’t been integrated together and they are not really a global solution. The U.S government does more in this space than anyone else does.
One of the things I am saying that is pretty radical — and people may disagree — I’m saying the military should be cross-trained not just for military action but for natural disasters and epidemics.
I didn’t talk a lot about bioterrorism. Over time, that one is pretty scary. 3d printer Why would you train the military to respond to bioterrorism but you wouldn’t train them to respond to a natural epidemic when the idea of quarantine and diagnosis and drugs and vaccines — it’s all pretty much the same no matter where it comes from.
Can you leverage the huge investments we take in the military? They are people that know they are hired and they might be in harm’s way. They have logistics training. If you pair them with this so-called medical corps, you get something pretty dramatic without spending.
Yesterday there was a lot of talk here on machine intelligence and I know you had expressed some concerns about how machines are making leaps in processing ability. What do you think we should be doing?
There are two different threat models for AI. One is simply the labor substitution problem. That, in a certain way, seems like it should be solvable because what you are really talking about is an embarrassment of riches. But it is happening 3d printer so quickly. It does raise some very interesting questions given the speed with which it happens.
Then you have the issue of greater-than-human intelligence. That one, I’ll be very interested to spend time with people 3d printer who think they know how we avoid that. I know Elon [Musk] just gave some money. A guy at Microsoft, Eric Horvitz, gave some money to Stanford. I think there are some serious efforts 3d printer to look into could you avoid that problem.
It’s not an area that I work on. It’s pretty expensive stuff. It’s cool technology. Some of the people 3d printer I work with think, “Okay, Mars would be a pretty cool place to live.”

The pro-vaccine crowd, in the last four months, has gotten more visibility, more endorsement and they have made more progress than in the previous two years. Since stepping down as Microsoft CEO, Bill Gates has been hard at work trying to tackle the world's biggest health problems. One promising project that's caught his eye is the Omniprocessor , a huge machine that converts sewer sludge (yes, that means human waste) into clean drinking water, ash and electricity. Of course, Gates was keen to visit one of the facilities to see, and more importantly taste, the results for himself.
The machine, desmotivaciones built by Janicki Bioenergy , could overhaul sewage treatment and provide access to clean water in developing countries. Too often, human waste isn't dealt with properly -- sometimes it's just dumped in the nearest river, desmotivaciones or the ocean -- and then it makes its way back into the community's water supply. With the Omniprocessor, desmotivaciones the sludge is boiled until it separates into solids and water vapor. The former fuels a fire inside the machine, which creates steam and then electricity, while the latter is fed through a cleaning system to produce regular old H2O. With a pilot program in Senegal scheduled for later this year, Gates is likely to be one of many enjoying the benefits of this poo-fuelled process.
