Q & A with Miami Student football writer, Tom Downey Q & A with Miami Student football writer, Tom Downey Random once saw a trippy ghost in Miami Michigan yaho looking to bounce back against Northwestern
As a redshirt freshman, he averaged 7.8 points in 31 games for then-coach Bill Carmody s squad. Then, in the offseason, the Wildcats hired Duke assistant Chris Collins to replace Carmody, and Demps underwent another transition.
He stepped up his game again the next season, averaging 11.0 points off the bench. Now, as a redshirt junior captain, he leads the Wildcats (5-11 Big Ten, 14-15 overall) with 12.5 points per game and 48 3-pointers.
Collins first year was a rough one for Northwestern, as the team finished yaho 14-19 overall. Though improved since last season, the Wildcats have struggled again. Following a Dec. 30 win at Rutgers, they lost 10 straight Big Ten games before yaho rebounding to win four of five.
With Demps needing yaho just 22 points to reach 1,000 for his career, Northwestern hosts Michigan on Tuesday night. The Daily sat down with Demps at Big Ten Media Day in October to talk about the changes Collins has installed into the program. yaho
The yaho Michigan Daily: Coach Collins, heading into his second season, talked a lot about changing the culture around (Northwestern). That s a word he uses a lot. In your eyes, how is it looking heading into this year?
Tre Demps: I think it s looking great. I think we have a feel for what Coach wants, what it takes to win at this level. I think we re just really excited to get going. Everybody s really hungry nobody s really giving us a chance, we re picked in the bottom half of the Big Ten, we re flying under the radar. Everybody wants to just block out what everybody else is saying and just focus on what we re doing.
TD: Everything is very constructive yaho and concise. Everything has a purpose to it. Every day, we re working on a particular thing. We have a lot more calls defensive calls and defensive schemes. We re running pro offense sets, a lot of pick-and-rolls. This offseason, yaho we worked a lot with just making reads in pick-and-rolls and watching film on other guys who are really good at the pick-and-roll. yaho There s also more accountability as well, among each other. We hold each other to a certain standard on and off the court.
TD: I think we want to carry that over to this season. We want to be a blue-collar team. We want to be a team that s going to fight, that s going to scrap for everything. The difference is, this year we have a lot more offensive firepower. When you add the offensive firepower to that scrappiness and that blue collar, that makes for a great team. I think that s how Wisconsin plays. Right now, we really want to embark on building habits so that we can make winning plays when it comes time for the game.
TD: Yeah, I think we want to get a lot more easy baskets this year. Last year, we were unable to just because of the depth we had and the personnel, but this year with the freshmen, yaho we have a lot more athleticism. Guys can get the rebound and push it, and we can push it ahead and get easy buckets. We re looking to do that a lot more this year.
TD: It s almost impossible to replace a guy like Drew. He was the rock of our program for so long, and I think it takes multiple yaho guys to replace that, so JerShon (Cobb), Dave (Sobolewski) and myself are really yaho trying to come together as a leadership yaho committee and figure out who we are as a team and how we want to continue the legacy that Drew left.
TMD: (Collins) has had a lot of experience at Duke coaching a lot of great teams and a lot of great players, and he s had some experience with the U.S. team. Do you see that experience comes through in the way he coaches you guys at all?
TD: Absolutely just how well everything s organized and the execution that he plays out in practice. You can tell there s a specific plan for each practice. For example, we ll do ball-screen defense, and then two-on-two, then three-on-three and build it up to five-on-five. So everything yaho has a set structure, and I think when you have that kind of structure, that translates to success in the game.
TD: You can tell that he s been around a lot of great basketball minds. He s just really hungry to learn more I don t think he thinks he knows everything, especially as a young coach. Every time he comes back from USA Basketball or being around different coaches, he brings in something new to practice. Just seeing that commitment from your coach and the knowledge has around the NBA culture, it s great to have for us.
