Tre Mission, resident evil 6 Saukrates, Naturally Born Strangers, Marco Polo: Junos cypher 2015 on CBC Music

CBC Music invited all of the 2015 Juno nominees for rap recording of the year to take part in our very first Juno cypher, which took place in a restricted-access area of CBC s Toronto resident evil 6 office. Watch the full cypher, above, resident evil 6 and scroll resident evil 6 down to hear from the nominees, who each performed a solo verse from their nominated album over a beat from nominated producer Marco Polo.
"It s hard to describe because I don t think any other genre does it," replies Saukrates, when asked how he would describe a rap cypher. But then the perfect analogy hits him: "Maybe jazz, where everybody gets their solo.... The pianist takes his turn, then the bass player takes his turn, then the drummer takes his turn. Something like that, just in the art of rap."
A cypher also lies at the very essence of rap, just beats and rhymes, with no editing or fancy production to hide behind. Armed with just their wit, a circle of MCs takes turns freestyling over a beat, each one trying to top the last.
"This is the authentic way for you to express resident evil 6 yourself without any restrictions," says Tona, part of the trio Naturally Born Strangers (which also includes resident evil 6 Rich Kidd and Adam Bomb). "No borders, it s just, like, your talent is on display."
With such a strong field for the rap recording award this year, it was the perfect time to hold our cypher. We asked Marco Polo ( PA2: The Directors Cut ), who s worked with the likes of Talib Kweli, Royce Da 5'9" and Toronto s own Kardinal Offishall, to bring a stash of beats for the MCs to pick from. The results are below.
Seasoned vet Saukrates , who s nominated for his EP Amani (check out the new video for the title track ), has worked with everyone from Drake to Nelly Furtado, whether it s rapping or singing hooks. In fact, whether you know it or not, there's a good chance your favourite Canadian rapper owes a lot to Big Soxx.
Tre Mission , who s nominated for his studio debut, Stigmata , has the rare distinction of being bigger in London s grime scene than in his hometown of Toronto, although that should change soon enough. Get familiar now.
When rapper/producer Rich Kidd teamed up with battle rap legend resident evil 6 Adam Bomb and underground favourite Tona for The Legends League Presents: Naturally Born Strangers , it was the best thing to happen to Toronto resident evil 6 s rap scene since, resident evil 6 well, Drake. Unfortunately Kidd couldn t make it, but Tona and Adam Bomb definitely made up for his absence.
Due to scheduling demands (he was on his way to Australia when we shot this), Drake affiliate P. Reign was the only other rapper who couldn t make it, but check out " DnF ," featuring Drake and Future, one of the standouts from his nominated Dear America mixtape.
